When developing a cosmetic formulation, emollients play a fundamental role. From a galenic and physicochemical perspective, an emollient is a hydrophobic or amphiphilic lipid substance mainly incorporated into the oil phase of emulsions, balms or skincare oils.
Its primary function goes beyond simply softening the skin: an emollient acts as a softening and smoothing agent. By filling the spaces between corneocytes in the stratum corneum, it helps fill intercellular micro-cracks and restore the integrity of the skin barrier.
For chemists and formulators, emollient selection largely relies on the concept of biomimicry. Plant-based lipids selected by formulators mimic the natural composition of human sebum. This biological affinity provides optimal skin comfort, excellent affinity with the epidermis and high tolerance across different skin types, including the most demanding ones.
For formulators, the choice of emollients determines not only the biological performance of the formula, but also its organoleptic profile and sensory signature.
Depending on its molecular weight, viscosity and surface tension, an emollient defines the sensory feel (oily, velvety or dry touch) as well as the spreading rate during application.
It provides the slip required during product application and massage, while modulating the absorption time, from rapid absorption with no residual film to a protective, enveloping effect.
Emollients can help reduce the tackiness of certain active ingredients or water-soluble gelling agents, providing a refined sensory experience and a powdery or satin finish.
From a physiological perspective, an emollient helps prevent skin dryness through controlled occlusion. By forming a protective film, it helps reduce transepidermal water loss (TEWL), thereby supporting skin hydration. This protective effect helps relieve feelings of tightness and protect the skin from external aggressors.
The market offers a wide range of emollients with varying rheological and environmental characteristics:
Rich in essential fatty acids, these triglycerides provide nourishment, antioxidant benefits and help maintain skin comfort on a daily basis.
Obtained through the esterification of naturally derived fatty acids and fatty alcohols, vegetable esters offer tailored sensory properties, including fast spreading, lightness and an evanescent feel.
A stable saturated hydrocarbon derived from squalene, vegetable squalane is a highly biomimetic emollient. Its affinity with the lipids naturally present in sebum provides exceptional softness and rapid absorption.
Valuable fractions derived from oils and rich in phytosterols and squalene, unsaponifiables are particularly suitable for supporting the lipid barrier and caring for weakened skin.
The development of clean beauty formulations is driving the replacement of synthetic silicones. New-generation bio-based emollients can provide lightness, slip and an evanescent finish while offering more sustainable formulation options.
The shift towards natural and organic cosmetics is no longer simply a trend, but reflects growing consumer expectations and evolving international market requirements.
Emollients can be used across a wide range of skincare and beauty applications:
In day creams, serums, lotions and facial oils, emollients help modulate texture to meet the needs of normal, dry or combination skin. In body care products, they provide nourishment and comfort after bathing or showering. They are also suitable for formulations designed for dry, sensitive, fragile or uncomfortable skin, as well as products developed for the delicate skin of babies and children.
In hair treatments, masks or scalp serums, emollients help coat the hair fibre, smooth the cuticles, enhance shine without weighing the hair down and protect it from dryness.
As an established manufacturer of cosmetic ingredients, SOPHIM has developed long-standing expertise in the transformation of plant-derived lipids. Recognised for their high quality, our emollients are designed to address the technical challenges faced by formulators seeking outstanding sensory and functional performance.
Our emblematic olive-derived squalane. This highly stable biomimetic emollient provides a dry, non-greasy feel and is ideal for supporting the skin barrier while enhancing the sensory profile of cosmetic formulations.
A natural active emollient derived from olive, designed to support the skin’s lipid barrier. It provides a rich yet non-sticky feel and is particularly suitable for nourishing and restorative skincare formulations.
A concentrate of olive oil unsaponifiables, this emollient helps restore skin suppleness, supports the skin’s structural integrity and contributes to maintaining the skin barrier.
As a pioneer in alternatives to silicones, SOPHIM supports the transition towards more natural formulations through a broad range of solutions:
Our ingredients are suitable for a wide range of developments, including face care, hair care, make-up and solid cosmetics.
