The Numerous Cosmetic Benefits of Squalane

Squalene is abundantly found in both the animal and plant kingdoms. In humans, for example, it is a component of sebum, the lipid film produced by the skin’s sebaceous glands, which serves a dual function of protection and hydration. Certain plants, like the olive, are particularly rich in squalene.

Squalene (C30H50) is an unsaturated hydrocarbon of the alkene type that is easily oxidizable. In cosmetics, squalane (C30H62) is preferred; it is a saturated hydrocarbon obtained by hydrogenating squalene, offering similar properties while being more stable. The applications and benefits of squalane in cosmetics are numerous. Squalane:

  • Deeply hydrates the skin;
  • Provides protection against oxidative stress, a factor in premature aging;
  • Plays a protective role for the epidermis;
  • Contributes to a brighter complexion;
  • Offers a texture appreciated in cosmetics, silky and non-greasy;
  • Has a very low comedogenic potential.

Sophim is one of the leaders in the production of plant-based squalane with Phytosqualan, derived from olives. This innovative cosmetic ingredient is our best-selling product internationally and enjoys recognition across many markets.

Phytosqualan meets the QD (quasi-Drugs) standards

In Japan, beauty products are categorized into distinct groups. The quasi-Drugs category falls between cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Japanese cosmetics are regulated by the Pharmaceutical and Food Safety Bureau, under the auspices of the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW).

Several types of beauty products can receive this recognition:

  • Deodorants,
  • Whitening products,
  • Anti-aging cosmetics,
  • Hair care and styling products,
  • Products for oily or acne-prone skin,
  • etc.

Cosmetics that achieve QD status must adhere to a specific set of requirements and choose cosmetic ingredients that meet the constraints and standards set in Japan. The methods of analysis, testing, and specifications to comply with the “QD” regulation differ from the cosmetic standards applicable in Europe and all other national markets.

Compliance with Quasi-Drugs specifications demonstrates Sophim’s commitment to its clients by offering ingredients that they can sell to international cosmetic firms looking to enter the Japanese market. It allows our clients to highlight specific claims about the benefits and effects of their beauty products sold in Japan.

This new recognition does not change the usage for our clients already present in the Japanese market: the quality of our ingredient remains unchanged, and Phytosqualan can still be incorporated into cosmetics marketed in the country.
